MHEV plus: The Next Generation of Audi Hybridization

With an increasing demand for alternative fuel vehicles, Audi has something new for consumers to enjoy. The automaker has unveiled MHEV plus, an advanced type of hybrid system that combines an electric battery with a combustion engine. Audi will equip two of its vehicles, the A5 and the Q5, with the new hybrid technology, which is housed in the Premium Platform Combustion.

How the Technology Works

Audi's new MHEV technology combines power from a 48V electric battery with a traditional gasoline engine. Audi will also equip its new MHEV vehicles with a special liquid cooling system that cools the electric motor and other components so that the car has plenty of power and torque on demand, regardless of conditions. With the MHEV system, Audi's vehicles can operate solely on electric power until the power supply runs out; at this point, they switch over to a combustion engine. The combination of the electric motor and the engine, Audi says, makes its vehicles more environmentally friendly to drive by reducing CO2 emissions and demand for regular fuel. The MHEV cars will also have regenerative braking capabilities, producing up to 25 kW of power with the MHEV system's electric drive module. Audi notes that the technology can be conveniently used with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive platforms. The automaker's MHEV vehicles are also designed with engine start-stop capabilities to help conserve energy when the car is not moving.

About the A5

The Audi A5 is one of two vehicles that will get the new MHEV technology. The A5 is a popular luxury sedan with a classy, high-quality interior design and an abundance of standard and available driver-assist features. It is also built for performance, and the new MHEV platform will enhance that trait even more. The Audi A5 comes with all-wheel drive and is offered in various trim levels.

About the Q5

For those wanting more space, the Q5 is a great option. The Q5 is a small luxury SUV, and it's one of Audi's most popular models. It has a classy exterior appearance and a modern, comfortable interior. Like the A5, the Q5 is also made for performance, and it is fun and engaging to drive. The Q5 comes with multiple packages so drivers can tailor the car to their liking.
