Recently, there has been a great deal of speculation that McLaren could be acquired by another automaker. In 2021, as far as the Woking locals were concerned, claims that Audi had purchased McLaren were untrue. However, just three days later, new speculation about the case appeared. There have been rumors that Audi might be joining Formula One due to the compliance adjustments for 2026.
Audi to Back McLaren
Audi, a Volkswagen Group brand, is expected to decide on whether or not to enter Formula One by the end of the first quarter of 2022 or the beginning of the second quarter. A final decision will be determined after the supervisory council meeting next month when the issue will be discussed.
Another theory is that VW Group has a backup plan in place, which would see them link up with Williams rather than Scuderia Ferrari in the event of a breakdown in their relationship with Ferrari.
Some have hypothesized that Audi may complete a full acquisition of McLaren Automotive, which the British premium supercar manufacturer has rejected. Volkswagen supervisory board will make the final call on whether or not Audi will compete in Formula One.
Conclusion
We'll have to wait and see what happens, as it's far too soon to predict whether Audi will buy McLaren. But, in any case, it seems that Audi will be enjoying the world's most-watched form of racing in 2026.
